Christianity is the Origin of the Concept of Individual Human Rights
In this sermon, now deceased Pastor Tim Keller describes the notion of “the logos” or ultimate singular truth by which we must align our entire life in order for it to be successful and not be destroyed by chaos. The “logos” that Keller describes in biblical terms is God’s law. He compares this view with the modern secular or humanist view to very accurately show the flaws in modern secular ethics.
In secular legal terms, that “logos” Keller describes is called the “common law”. The common law is about individual human rights and equality between the government and individual humans. That equality is the origin of “justice” as we use the word on this site. The common law which implements God’s law represents an attempt to define what Keller describes as “self-evident” morality in a legal or court setting. You can, even to this day, lawfully invoke the common law in any constitutional courtroom. You cannot, however, invoke it in a franchise court which worships government as God.
