REBUTTAL: Sovereign Citizens and Self-Divinity

In this ministry, sovereignty is NEVER about self-divinity or making any man into god, equal to god, or above God in rights, power, or authority in any area. Those who claim to be equal to or above God ultimately seek to be irresponsible for their actions or choices to any superior authority. This ministry seeks to ensure that people NEVER abandon responsibility and accountability to a higher power above themself. This is a reflection, in fact, of why God refers to Himself in the Bible as “The Most High”.
Modern Christianity and the sovereignty movement have corrupted these ideas by insisting that we are divinity and that God is IN us, and thus that we are god. We, on the other hand, claim that we can only be sovereign when we are accountable to God’s laws and obey them faithfully. By obeying His laws, we are acting as His divine agents and therefore reflect His character as a sovereign. We are NEVER, however, “sovereign” in any sense of the word separate and apart from our obedience to His laws and our agency in representing Him.

The first sin of mankind was to pursue self-divinity. Adam and Eve wanted to be like god:
For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Other verses remind us that men are not gods:
Put them in fear, O Lord,
That the [a]nations may know themselves to be but men. Selah
[Psalm 9:20, Bible, NKJV]Now the Egyptians are men, and not God;
And their horses are flesh, and not spirit.
When the Lord stretches out His hand,
Both he who helps will fall,
And he who is helped will fall down;
They all will perish together.

Those who claimed to be God were killed. It’s a capital crime in the bible to seek to become god:
“Because your heart is lifted[a] up,
And you say, ‘I am a god,
I sit in the seat of gods,
In the midst of the seas,’
Yet you are a man, and not a god,
Though you set your heart as the heart of a god
3 (Behold, you are wiser than Daniel!
There is no secret that can be hidden from you!
4 With your wisdom and your understanding
You have gained riches for yourself,
And gathered gold and silver into your treasuries;
5 By your great wisdom in trade you have increased your riches,
And your heart is lifted up because of your riches),”6 ‘Therefore thus says the Lord God:
“Because you have set your heart as the heart of a god,
7 Behold, therefore, I will bring strangers against you,
The most terrible of the nations;
And they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom,
And defile your splendor.

And you shall die the death of the slain
In the midst of the seas.9 “Will you still say before him who slays you,
‘I am a god’?
But you shall be a man, and not a god,

Fall of the King of Babylon

Herod’s Violent Death

21 So on a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat on his throne and gave an oration to them. 22 And the people kept shouting, “The voice of a god and not of a man!” 23 Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and [g]died.

The new age movement focuses on self-divinity.
- Becoming like god is replaced with realizing you are already god.
- Knowledge of good and evil is replaced with knowledge of the universal self.
It’s the same bait Satan gave to Eve.

There is a HUGE difference between BEING God and acting as an AGENT of God. KNOWING God and following His laws is how we reflect our agency on His behalf, but acting as his AGENT does not make us SYNONYMOUS with God.
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”

Our About Us page clarifies that we are AGENTS, and not MASTERS:

Clearly, there is a misunderstanding by Richard Rohr in his book and also by the sovereignty community and even Christianity about the law of agency. Equivocation with words is abused to make God’s SERVANT, which is us, greater than or equal to the Master, which is Him. Below is a book on the Law of Agency so you won’t be fooled:

The Bible refers to those who are OBEYING His laws and acting as His servant as being “in Him”. The fact that God is “IN US” does not make us literally “God”.
